Originally this part of Alaska was Russian until the US bought it in 1867. Also pictured on the plate are Ketchikan, known for its flora and fauna (bears), the Hubbard Glacier and the capital Junneau. Seatle is also on the plate, undoubtedly because the head office of Holland America Line is located there.

Amsterdam 2007

Maker: Royal Goedewaagen “Blue Delft” Holland
Diameter:
In collection: Jan Oege Zijlstra
Details: The plate has the text ‘Mariner Appreciation Day Shanghai to Hong Kong’ and then ‘ms Amsterdam October 17, 2007’.
There is an Employee Appreciation Day, a secular holiday, celebrated on the first Friday in March in some countries, such as the United States and Canada. It is an “unofficial” holiday that was created in 1995, as a day when companies can thank their employees for their hard work and efforts throughout the year. The wood ‘Mariner’ in the title of this article refers since 1993 to the current Mariner Society, of which one automatically becomes a member once a cruise is made. A HAL-BLOG tells the following about an appreciation event in March 2012:
500+ Day Mariners aboard Amsterdam with more than 234 years of collective cruising were honored at a special luncheon in the Crow’s Nest. The venue was transformed into an elegant restaurant to honor Mariners who have cruised more than 500 days with HAL. For only the second time in the history of these events, so many 500+ day Mariners were on board that two recognition luncheons were held. Sea days for the Mariners present totaled 85,525, which equates to more than 234 collective years of cruising with HAL.”
